The Democrats Need to Grow Up

March 6, 2008 · No Comments

The election is over. I’m calling it right now. Screw the numbers. Hillary will win the nomination, Obama’s consensus and momentum will wither, and John McCain will be our next President.

It’s a done deal.

At this point the Democrats are so disjointed that the GOP isn’t even bothering to hider their machinations; openly encouraging their constituents to party-hop in support of Hillary. This would normally tell an opponent something. Something like, oh, I don’t know, the GOP strategists think Obama will be harder to beat. Nope. But what do you expect from a party whose last Presidential candidate hired an election strategist whose record was 0-7? Meanwhile the GOP gloats — openly — and presses their attack. There hasn’t been an opponent this brazen since Coach Red used Coach Klein’s playbook to stifle the Waterboy. And the while the Democrats blithely pretend that it doesn’t matter since both candidates enjoy comfortable leads.

Ridiculous.

The GOP never concedes an election. Even when they are down, they are never out. They will come up with a strategy to narrow that gap and if the Democrats are willing to hand it to them on a silver platter, alls the better. If this party doesn’t wake up and recognize this fact, they will lose, regardless of the candidate. Rove’s column is entitled “Alive!” for Christsakes, and I refuse to believe he was referring to Hillary. Call me cynical but I severely doubt he was excited enough about Hillary’s win to give her the exclamation point. Rove knows: Hillary’s wins mean the GOP is back, regardless of which Democratic candidate gets the nod. She’ll either offer her vulnerable self up or strip Obama down.

It’s time to stop the analysis and the intellectualization and time to stand on principle. The simple truth is that Hillary’s campaign is premised on manipulation, alteration of rules, Texas party-jumpers, and “Superdelegates” while Barack’s is premised on broad-based appeal, novel thinking, originality, and fresh thought. Stop running the numbers, wringing your hands, pretending that Hillary’s actions are unselfish, or that Obama’s voters are readily converted. Recognize: if you run Hillary, you will lose.

It is time for this party to grow up. We can’t afford another also ran like John Kerry, another susceptible candidate like Al Gore, or another slippery kid-with-his-hand-caught-in-the-cookie-jar like Bill. Fuck Florida and Michigan, fuck Hillary and her superdelegates, and fuck momentum. Haul out the dirt on Bill, release the secret lesbian footage, and do whatever it takes to support the first truly inspirational candidate this party has put forth since JFK.

(And tell Rove to fuck off too, his Karl the Kolumnist bit is revolting.)
